José Carreras raised 3.8 million euros for the Leukemia Foundation

The opera singer José Carreras (76) once again collected around 3.8 million euros for the fight against leukemia with his annual donation gala – and was on stage himself for the first time since 2019. The 28th José Carreras Gala was broadcast live on MDR from Leipzig on Wednesday evening. The Spanish tenor had only been switched on in the past two years because of Corona, and the audience was not allowed in 2020/21 either.

The money collected goes to the artist’s foundation, which finances scientific research and social projects. Carreras himself suffered from leukemia in 1987 and is pursuing the goal of making the disease curable for everyone affected. Last year, 3.8 million euros were also collected.

Carreras got the evening going with the song “White Christmas” and welcomed the audience. “Unfortunately, the last two times I was only able to take part in the gala from Barcelona, I felt their warmth and generosity even from a great distance,” said Carreras. The moderators Mareile Höppner and Sven Lorig then led through the evening.

As every year, Carreras was supported by many stars. On the stage in Leipzig were among others: Chris de Burgh, Sasha, Pur, David Garrett and Max Raabe. Well-known actors and sports celebrities such as RB Leipzig coach Marco Rose and ex-professional boxer Axel Schulz took a seat at the donation phones. Soccer world champion Sepp Maier sent a video message.
