The Astros would be looking to fill the void left in the bullpen by Kendall Graveman, who will miss the entire year after undergoing surgerywith the best reliever available on the market.
Houston is trying to reach a deal with Josh Hader, MLB Network analyst Jon Heyman reported. According to Ken Rosenthal and Chandler Rome of The Athletic (subscription required), the club’s interest is not new; the Astros attempted to acquire him before the 2023 trade deadline. Hader spent a couple of years in Houston’s minor league system before being traded to the Brewers during the middle of the 2015 season.
Hader is seeking the largest contract ever awarded for a reliever, a record currently held by Puerto Rican Edwin Díaz, who agreed at the time with the Mets for five years and US$102 million. According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, it seems that with each passing day, it becomes less likely that the left-hander will get a contract of those characteristics.
“Many clubs have become reluctant to spend large sums of money on closers, even those with Hader’s track record, so it will be fascinating to see what his contract ends up being once he signs,” Feinsand wrote..
It’s unclear if the Astros extended a contract offer to Hader, but if they do acquire him, the flamethrower would join Ryan Pressly and Bryan Abreu to form what would be a solid back end of the Astros bullpen.
