– Journalist and police officer killed in attack in Mexico
A Mexican journalist was murdered while speaking with plainclothes police in the state of Sonora. A police officer died in the attack.

A journalist and a police officer were killed during an armed attack that occurred overnight from Sunday to Monday in the state of Sonora, in northwestern Mexico, local authorities announced, reporting the arrest of three suspects .
The attack occurred in San Luis Río Colorado when four plainclothes agents were speaking with journalist Jesús Gutiérrez Vergara of the Notiface news site. The Public Ministry first informed about X (ex-Twitter) coordinating an operation “to find those responsible for the direct attack against four municipal police officers (…) during which three of them were injured, one was was killed and Gutiérrez Vergara lost his life collaterally.”
Unpunished assassinations
The prosecution specified that the journalist was a neighbor of the police officers who were on leave at the time of the attack. They were the target of fire from a van, according to the same source. The mayor of the municipality, Santos González Yescas, then indicated that three alleged attackers had been captured during a police operation during which two firearms, a vehicle and drugs were seized.
Since the start of the year at least four other journalists have been killed, the last of them being Nelson Matus, director of a local news site, shot dead on July 16 in Acapulco (west). The authorities are investigating whether these crimes are linked to their reporting, but most assassinations of journalists go unpunished, deplores Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

The year 2022 was the deadliest for the press in the country with thirteen assassinations of journalists. With more than 420,000 assassinations and 100,000 disappearances since the launch in 2006 of a militarized offensive against drug traffickers, Mexico is one of the most violent countries in the world.
