Juanita Castro, the younger sister of former Cuban leaders Fidel and Raúl whom she opposed for decades, died this Monday at the age of 90 in Miami, reported a journalist close to the family.

“Today Juanita Castro went ahead of us on the path of life and death, an exceptional woman, a tireless fighter for the cause of her Cuba that she loved so much,” María Antonieta Collins, author of the memoirs of the deceased, who lived in Miami since the 60s.

Juanita Castro left Cuba in 1964 after breaking relations with her brothers Fidel – who died in Havana in 2016 – and Raúl due to disagreements about the direction the Revolution had taken.

She then went into exile in Miami, from where she publicly denounced the work of her brothers at the head of the island and even collaborated with the CIA, under the alias “Donna”, in the plans to overthrow them, according to what she herself confessed.

In the Florida city, the youngest of the Castros opened a pharmacy where she worked for decades.

Her dual role as sister of the leaders of communist Cuba and member of the exile in Florida was difficult for her to bear, as she recounted in her memoirs, titled “Fidel and Raúl, my brothers, the secret history.”

“Without a doubt, I have suffered more than the rest of the exile because on no side of the Straits of Florida do they give me respite and few understand the paradox of my life,” he wrote. “For those of Cuba I am a deserter because I left and denounced the established regime. For many in Miami I am persona non grata for being the sister of Fidel and Raúl.”

According to the media outlet Univisión, the woman died of natural causes in a Miami hospital.

“His sister Emma and extended family ask for privacy at this very painful time. There will be no interviews and according to her will her funeral will be private,” Marie Antoinette Collins wrote in her Instagram post.
