Julia Ferreyra has had mood swings since she was informed that her daughter’s murderer had decided to confess where he would have buried his partner’s body almost twenty years ago. The woman tries to concentrate on the dough for the cakes that she has to prepare to sell. She says that cooking is her therapy, her escape, her distraction to appease the anxiety that obtaining the remains of Andrea López (25) generates in her to be able to bury her and have a specific place to bring her a flower, the I desire her the most. Julia is hopeful, she believes that the femicide told the truth and that he finally claimed to have killed her, something she denied from the beginning.

“I was right,” he says in a telephone communication with PROFILE. It is that in 2004 when her daughter disappeared, Julia mentioned the Monte Chue field where last week Víctor Purreta indicated five possible places where he would have hidden Andrea’s body, it is that according to the former boxer he did not remember exactly due to the passage of the time. But he narrated that he buried her “naked and wrapped in a sheet” and all the points between them are close.

“When this happened, I gave information that he was going to hunt in that field and I knew him inside out. But the raking, at that moment, was done on the edge of the road and he, now, pointed in five parts, but from the wire fence about 60 meters inland. I was not mistaken that my daughter was in that field, ”he maintains.

That field located on the side of National Route 35, about 20 kilometers from Santa Rosa, was pointed out by Purreta on Thursday, July 27. That day he met with the prosecutor in the case after personnel from the Human Rights Secretariat informed the official that the ex-boxer wanted to mark where he had buried Andrea’s body, whom he beat to death on February 10, 2004 in front of of their son, Carlos Emanuel, who was 5 years old at the time. Since then the young woman has been missing.

Ten years later, Purreta was sentenced to 18 years in prison for “simple homicide” because femicide was proven for the judges (although at that time that legal figure did not exist). “In Purreta and the quality of his puncher, each fist was a weapon and with those weapons he destroyed the life of Andrea López,” the judges who tried him had ruled. And finally they unified the sentence to 25 years, for another reason.

In order to arrive at that trial, the statement of Carlos was important, who in November 2011 narrated how he had seen his father hit, kick and attack Andrea with a whip. Purreta always declared himself oblivious to the fact. Until now.

Purreta’s confession came as a surprise to Julia. “He always told me that I blamed him, but that he hadn’t killed anyone. So I thought, as a punishment, he was never going to say it. That’s why whenever I gave notes, he asked him if he didn’t want to tell me that he should confess it to his son. But since he was denied transitory exits twice, it was possible that they advised him to speak, although the prosecutor told me that this does not benefit him at all”, says Julia and highlights: “What I feel is that he recognized the crime and that one does not He was lying”.

“The truth – he continues – is that I did not expect the arrival of this moment. He gave details of how he had buried her, the screw in her foot. When the prosecutor came to see me, she didn’t tell me that, but she asked me if Andrea had had an operation and then I told her that he had thrown her out of the car and had blown up her leg. They had to operate on her and they put that screw on her. He marked five places in that field and talked about the screw. He gave a lot of details, that’s why I think, together with my lawyer, that he is telling the truth”, Julia details, who is only waiting for them to give her “a bag with a paper that says that she is my daughter to give her land and have a place to take her a flower”.

These days for Julia are not easy and she is invaded by a whirlwind of sensations. It is that tomorrow marks the first anniversary of the death of another of her children. “I try to be as strong as possible. But there are many emotions together, since Monday marks one year since the death of my eldest son and I try to keep calm. I make cakes, empanadas and I had to deliver some orders. My head is focused on that, my therapy is cooking and kneading. It is an escape, ”she recounts.

Julia waits for the moment when they inform her that the result is positive, although she knows it is a job that specialists will take a long time. “I hope they find something, give me a bag with a piece of paper that says that she is my daughter and that I can bury her as she deserves so that she can rest in peace and we close the duel.”

But she is clear that she does not want to participate in the operation that is carried out in that field or see the remains that they could find. “Let’s hope it is, that they find her, that’s how I close a duel. Andrea and my son are giving me strength to continue”.

sentences without a body

Former boxer Víctor Purreta is one of the twelve femicides who received a sentence for killing, despite the fact that the victim’s body has not been found.

The NGO La Casa del Encuentro produced a report describing the cases ranging from 1989 to 2017. Among the cases, the femicides Salvador Pucci, Diego Hervatín, Mauricio Severi, Daniel Lagostena, Mariano Luque, Aldo Vargas, Roberto Cejas, César Villanueva, Rubén Carrazone, Marcos Durán and Daría Suárez.

“When the victim’s body has been made to disappear to achieve impunity, it is essential to reconstruct the ‘body of the crime’ with probative facts to establish a conviction. It is an accumulation of evidence that demonstrates the commission of the crime where a thorough analysis is essential, with consistent documentary evidence, as well as testimonies and a solid chain of evidence to reach a conviction for femicide ”, it is explained there.
