National coach Julian Nagelsmann wants to rebuild the German national team’s starting eleven for better defensive work. “We have to change the squad structure a bit in order to become more defensive monsters,” said Nagelsmann on Saturday evening in the ZDF sports studio. This meant he abandoned his plan to field the eleven best footballers.

“That’s always the interesting question,” the national coach explained intensively: “How do you fill the first eleven? How many players do you have in there who love to think offensively? And how many players do you fill with more defensive-minded ones? heads?”

The distribution “doesn’t fit 100 percent with the status we currently have,” he analyzed. “We will make adjustments to the structure of the first eleven.” This also includes simplifying things tactically and “breaking them down even more”.

The recent defeats once morest Turkey (2:3) and in Austria (2:0) have raised considerable doubts regarding a quick turnaround under the new national coach. After the game in Vienna, Nagelsmann admitted: We will probably no longer be defensive monsters.”

Now he assured: “We have learned our lessons from these games.” One is that the experiment with Kai Havertz on the left side of defense is “over”.

Nagelsmann also spoke regarding the roles of Joshua Kimmich and Manuel Neuer as well as Rudi Völler’s call.
