Julien Uyttendaele: The Brussels MP’s Departure from the PS and the Future of Parliamentarism

In the political world of Brussels, this is hardly a surprise: Julien Uyttendaele and the PS are over. The Brussels MP announced to Le Soir that he was not a candidate for the federal and regional elections, and was distancing himself.

Among the reasons, Saint-Gillois points to the socialist federation managed by Ahmed Laaouej. “There are only a few people left who make the real decisions and we, especially as parliamentarians, must take care of after-sales service,” he laments to our colleagues.

But also, and above all, the communitarian strategy of the Brussels PS is denounced. Defender of a hard line in matters of secularism, the MP found himself isolated in the issue of ritual slaughter and neutrality at the Stib. “Important figures from the Brussels PS clearly summoned me to a sort of popular tribunal to ask me to follow the group. The rational arguments that I could put forward had absolutely no value. There is no one left within the Brussels Socialist Party which embodies the line that I defend today.”

The deputy will continue his mandate until its end. He will have thus completed two legislatures within the Brussels hemicycle. Despite his grim observation: “I have the impression that parliamentarism is dead. And perhaps one day democracy will be too.”
