July 2023 Consumer Price Index: Food and Non-Food Product Increases, Regional Variations, and Core Inflation

The consumer price index increased by 0.3% in July 2023 compared to the previous month. This variation is the result of the rise of 0.7% in the index of food products and 0.2% in the index of non-food products.

The increases in food products observed between June and July 2023 mainly concern “Fruits” with 9.2%, “Fish and seafood” with 4.4%, “Meats” with 0.7%, “Oils and fats” with 0.3%, “Coffee, tea and cocoa” with 0.2% and “Sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery” with 0.1%. On the other hand, prices fell by 3.3% for “Vegetables”, by 0.6% for “Milk, cheese and eggs” and by 0.2% for “Bread and cereals”. For non-food products, the increase mainly concerned “Fuel” prices with 0.5%.

The largest CPI increases were recorded in Al-hoceima with 2.9%, Beni-Mellal with 1.4%, Safi with 1.2%, Tetouan with 1.1%, Dakhla with 1.0%, in Kenitra with 0.7%, in Laâyoune and Guelmim with 0.6% and in Rabat with 0.5%. On the other hand, decreases were recorded in Fez with 0.5% and in Errachidia with 0.3%.

Compared to the same month of the previous year, the consumer price index rose by 4.9% during the month of July 2023 (after 5.5% in June) as a result of the increase in index of food products by 11.7% and that of non-food products by 0.4%. For non-food products, the variations range from a drop of 7.0% for “Transport” to an increase of 5.8% for “restaurants and hotels”.

Under these conditions, the core inflation indicator, which excludes products at volatile prices and products at public prices, would have increased by 0.3% in July 2023 compared to June. 2023 and 5.4% compared to July 2022.
