June’s Darkest Mile: 75 Souls Lost to Road Carnage in a Single Month

The Road Safety Observatory (OSV) reported that during the month of June it recorded at least 223 traffic accidents throughout Venezuela, in which 75 people died and 226 people were injured.

Of the total number of deaths, 44 were linked to motorcycle accidents (36 drivers and 8 grillers). They were followed by drivers of private vehicles (11), companions or occupants (10), pedestrians hit by cars (4) and cyclists (3).

The OSV detailed that the total number of injured people totaled 226 cases, of which 75.7% were men and 21.2% women.

It also indicated that 51.1% of the accidents recorded in the country occurred from Monday to Thursday, while 48.9% occurred on the weekends from Friday to Sunday.

The entities with the highest number of cases are: Miranda (26.4%); followed by Capital District (19.7%); Bolívar (13.9%); Carabobo (7.6%) and Falcón (7.17%).

36.7% of the total number of accidents occurred on avenues, 31.3% on highways; 10.7% in streets; 22% on secondary roads and 4.4% on trunk roads.

In addition, it indicated that simple crashes represented 30.4%; multiple crashes and skids (motorized vehicles down) 14.3%; windings 13.0%; crashes with a fixed object 10.7%; only one case of a person falling from a moving vehicle, and nine of the 223 accidents did not indicate the cause.
