The ski lift operator Jungfraubahn recorded a clear increase in attendance on all of its lines in 2023, without however exceeding pre-pandemic figures. The outlook looks promising for the winter season.

The historic cogwheel train which runs to the Jungfraujoch saw the number of passengers soar by 61.1% over one year to around 1 million, the Oberland company detailed on Thursday. In comparison with 2019, a year described as a “record” by the Bernese group, attendance fell by 4.6%.

For the gondola between Grindelwald and First, an increase of 27.3% to 842,300 people transported was noted. The line linking Lauterbrunnen to Mürren (Mürrenbahn) saw a 23.8% increase in attendance to 451,900 passengers, compared to an increase of 29.4% to 825,000 people for the Harder funicular. The Eigerexpress “3S” (tri-cable gondola), put into service in 2020, generated ridership of some 2 million people, an increase of 38.8% over one year.

The number of skiers transported to the Jungfrau area finally reached 207,800 (+28.1%).

More international tourists

In its press release, Jungfraubahn states that attendance has continued to increase month by month in 2023, with the number of tourists from Southeast Asia, India and the United States having increased significantly. Chinese and Japanese visitors returned to the Bernese Oberland in the second half of the year, although fewer than in peak years. There are still around 120,000 customers missing from reaching these peaks.

The new winter sports season began on December 2 under fairly favorable auspices. According to the Bernese company, more than 32,000 “Top4” ski passes were sold during the pre-sale, or 1,000 fewer than the previous year. However, the number of visitors jumped by 28.1% to 207,800 people. Jungfraubahn claims the “best start to the season” in its history.
