He has won everything there is to win during his time at Liverpool.

Now, however, Jürgen Klopp is in his last season at the club.

– I realized that my resources are not infinite, he says at the first press conference after the announcement.

The news struck like a bolt from the blue on Friday, two days after the Premier League leaders secured a League Cup final.

Jürgen Klopp and his staff are leaving after the season – after more than eight years at the club.

The promise to the fans: Never again in England

In a video he explains his choice.

– I absolutely love everything about this club, this city, our fans, the team, the coaching staff. I love everything. That I still make this decision shows you that I am convinced that it is a decision I have to make. It’s about me, how should I say it, starting to run out of energy. I have no worries now. But I know I can’t do the job again, again, again and again.

Now a sabbatical awaits the German who took over Liverpool in 2015.

– No club team, no national team for next year. No other English club ever again. Even if I don’t have anything to eat, it won’t happen, says Klopp at a press conference on Friday.

The answer about the successor

Liverpool leads the Premier League and has good title chances in several places during the spring.

– I’d rather put absolutely everything into this season and then take a break or quit. You realize that we (talked to a journalist of the same age) are no longer young rabbits who hope as high as we did before.

Will you have something to say about your successor?

– I will not say anything about my successor. There are so many people working here who have one idea: to find a perfect solution for Liverpool. The last thing they need is advice from the old man leaving.

Trains the club through the season

According to Liverpool’s official statement, the 56-year-old should have notified the club of his decision already in November.

Klopp took over Liverpool in the autumn of 2015 and during his time at Anfield has won six titles, including both the Champions League (2019) and the Premier League (2020).

He will continue to coach the club through the season before he leaves his post.

A season where Liverpool is still in the running for four titles.

– We will get an opportunity (for withdrawal). Maybe the last match day. But there is time for such things then. Now we just have to go for it. Everyone on the outside will want to use this, laugh at it and disturb us. But we’re Liverpool, we’ve been through tougher things together. And you’ve been through tougher things before me. Let this become a strength, says Klopp.

Taking a year off

The goal for Klopp going forward is to take a break of at least a year from the coaching job. This then applies to both club and national teams. It announces German Sky Sports.
