FORMER 10th and 12th Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) emphasized that the right to inquiry is an effort to investigate allegations of fraud in the 2024 election. He supports the proposal for the right to inquiry.
JK further touched on the political conflicts in 1966 and 1998 which gave rise to a major crisis that hit Indonesia, both on the social and economic side. The right to inquiry is still needed to avoid problems in the future.
“The right of inquiry is needed to clarify allegations of fraud in the general election (election) so that it doesn’t happen again in future elections,” said JK when giving a speech to students at the University of Indonesia (UI), Thursday (7/3)
JK assessed that the realization of the right to inquiry was good for both parties, in this case the plaintiff and the defendant. Because, said JK, the existence of the right to inquiry could be a moment for the defendant and plaintiff to clarify suspicions about the recent election.
“Of course it’s good for both parties, because now there are a lot of rumors that this is a problem. So, if there is a questionnaire about whether there really isn’t a problem, that’s good so it will eliminate suspicion,” said JK, which was greeted with applause from dozens of students.
The opposition in a democracy is required to play a critical role in maintaining democratic balance and ensuring that power is not abused by the government.

On the other hand, JK said that there was actually no political party that was founded to act as an opposition. Basically, every political party has the same goal, namely to win power.
“The opposition was an accident, because they didn’t win they became the opposition,” said the senior Golkar party politician.
Apart from this, JK encouraged the losing party in the 2024 Election to dare to take an opposition stance amidst the discourse of reconciliation echoed by the presidential and vice presidential candidate number 2 Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka who were declared temporarily superior in the vote recapitulation version of the Republican General Election Commission.
