The KAC beat the Black Wings 2-1 away on Sunday and became the first ICE team to make it into the quarter-final play-offs. The frontrunner from Klagenfurt also won the fourth duel of the season with Linz, which, in sixth place, is in the middle of the race for the top six. The third-placed Salzburg team recovered with a 4-1 win at home against VSV after three defeats in a row. Villach remains seventh on points with the Black Wings.

4,087 spectators in Linz saw a courageous performance by the Black Wings, who have recently been anything but spoiled for success. The Upper Austrians also took the lead in the middle third through Andreas Kristler (25th) in the power play. The league leaders, who competed without Paul Potsma (injured) and Niki Kraus (ill), knew how to counter. Simeon Schwinger (39th) equalized before the break before Nick Petersen (47th) put the Carinthians in the lead.

The Black Wings then tried to force the equalizer, but missed good opportunities when they were in the majority or failed because of KAC keeper Sebastian Dahm. The Klagenfurt team now has four wins from the last five rounds; head coach Kirk Furey’s team only lost in a penalty shootout against Innsbruck.

Even without Peter Schneider (injured), Thomas Raffl (ill) and Ryan Murphy (birth of the child), Salzburg were eager to end their negative run. After an even but goalless first third, Villach went ahead through Robert Sabolic in the power play (28th). But the home team didn’t let themselves be deterred and scored three more times in the ten minutes until the second break. Dennis Robertson (31′) equalized before Lucas Thaler made it 3-1 with his double strike within 34 seconds (38′).

The VSV then came up again, but Salzburg made the preliminary decision before the final phase through Drake Rymsha (54th) and remained undefeated in the sixth home game in a row.
