On the 7th, the opening ceremony of the special national athletics competition, “Burning Inspiration Kagoshima National Athletic Meet” (Kagoshima National Athletic Meet), was held at Shiranami Stadium in Kagoshima City, marking the beginning of 11 days of heated competition. Approximately 15,000 athletes will take part in 32 formal competitions under the tournament slogan, “Hot Heartbeat, The Wind Comes from the South.” The Kagoshima National Athletic Meet, scheduled to be held in 2020, has been postponed for the first time in history due to the new coronavirus. The players prepare for the actual race with three years’ worth of dedication.

After the winter games in February and the pre-season games in September, Kagoshima Prefecture finished 12th in both the men’s and women’s overall results (Emperor’s Cup) and the women’s overall results (Empress’s Cup). The prefecture is aiming to win the Emperor’s Cup and Empress’s Cup for the first time in 51 years, since the Taiyo National Athletic Meet in 1972.

The prefectural team included many talented players. For the adult women’s softball team, Hitomi Kawabata (DENSO), who won a gold medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, is a member. Kimihiko Imamura, a member of the Rio de Janeiro Olympic team and a member of Nihon Keizai University, will be participating in the men’s sailing competition.

Top athletes from outside the prefecture also visit. Ryota Yamagata (Hiroshima), the Japanese record holder in the men’s 100m track and field, and Nozomi Tanaka (Hyogo), who placed in the women’s 5,000m at the World Track and Field Championships in August, entered the event.

The opening program for the general opening ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m. and end at 4:59 p.m. It is expected that around 3,000 athletes will attend, and His Majesty the Emperor will give a speech. There will be a torch-lighting, pre-ceremony performances by about 1,700 prefectural residents, and a musical performance by the band.

NHK will broadcast the event live from 3:20 p.m. Traffic restrictions will be in place around the venue.
