Kang Ho-dong (61), head of Yulgok Agricultural Cooperative in Hapcheon, Gyeongsangnam-do, was elected as president of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, representing 2.06 million farmers. It has been eight years since 2016 that a person from Yeongnam was selected as president.

On the 25th, new Chairman Kang Ho-dong was elected as the 25th President of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation after a runoff vote in the election held at the main auditorium of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation in Jung-gu, Seoul. He took first place in the first round of voting, receiving 607 out of 1,245 votes, but failed to receive a majority of the votes and was held in a runoff election with second place candidate Cho Deok-hyeon (67). Afterwards, he was elected, defeating candidate Cho in the runoff election.

Chairman Kang is a person who was elected to his fifth term in Yulgok Agricultural Cooperative, and his main pledges this time include revitalizing local agricultural and livestock cooperative economic projects and coexistence between urban and rural cooperatives. To this end, they said they would raise 20 trillion won in interest-free funds and provide support of 2 to 50 billion won to local agricultural and livestock cooperatives, and increase competitiveness to the level of first-tier financial institutions by making mutual finance independent. Chairman Kang’s term of office is four years, and begins after the regular general meeting in March. In his speech about being elected, he said, “I will create a National Agricultural Cooperative Federation in which local agricultural cooperatives are the owners.”

Meanwhile, this election was held as a ‘direct election system’ in which all 1,111 union presidents across the country voted for the first time in 17 years since 2007. On this day, 1,106 out of 1,111 union presidents, excluding 5, participated in the vote. In addition, ‘additional voting rights’ were introduced for the first time, allowing the president of a union with more than 3,000 members to cast two votes.
