Karachi, the financial capital of Pakistan, has topped the list of world’s unlivable cities. This was stated in a report released by The Economist Intelligence Unit. Karachi is ranked 168th in the 2022 list of global livable cities released by the organization. Karachi is included in the list of 172 countries. Other cities that performed worst in the rankings were Damascus in Syria, Tripoli in Libya and Lagos in Nigeria.
The ranking was done on the basis of health, infrastructure development, education, culture and environment. Countries are given a score from 1 to 100 in the ranking. A city in the least livable category is given a score of 1. Ideal cities are given a score of 100. Karachi has a total score of 37.5 in the ranking. Karachi received a very low score of 20 on the sustainability factor. Karachi scored 33 for healthcare, 35 for culture and environment, 66 for education and 51 for infrastructure development.

This is not the first time that Karachi has performed poorly in the rankings of liveable cities. Karachi was ranked 134 out of 140 cities in 2021. In 2019, Karachi was ranked 136th. Cities in Western Europe and Canada topped the list. The Austrian city of Vienna has topped the list of most livable cities. This is the fourth time in five years that Vienna has taken the top spot. Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark, took the second place in the ranking. In third place is the city of Melbourne.
“Of the top ten cities, 9 are small and medium-sized cities. “All the cities in the top 50 are part of rich nations,” the report said. New York City ranks 69th on the list. The Ukrainian city of Kiev was not included in the ranking due to its continued Russian occupation. According to the report, Russia’s major cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg could not be included in the list due to ongoing conflict.
