According to the Geodynamic Institute, from 18:50 to 19:30 on Monday 4/3 there were earthquakes in Kefalonia 3 earthquakes over 3 Richter.
First was the 3.2 Richter earthquake, then a 3.7 Richter earthquake, and then a 3.5 Richter earthquake. Between them, but also before and after them, there have been dozens of small earthquakes, which have not stopped since Sunday (03.03.2024).
Two weak earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.5 and 3.3 on the Richter scale occurred in the early hours of Monday (4/3) near the northern coast of Kefalonia.
The earthquakes can be of low intensity, with the strongest being a 3.5 Richter and a 3.4 Richter, however, as can be seen on the map of the Geodynamic Institute, there are too many and they all have their epicenter in approximately the same area in the northern part of the island.

Seismologists are monitoring the seismic activity, however, as Mr. Tselentis notes, the phenomenon will continue for several days due to the small focal depth.

“In the last 24 hours we have observed a very intense microseismic activity North of Assos in a NW-SE direction (green on the map). It has nothing to do with the great fault that runs parallel to Paliki (which gave us the great earthquake of Lixouri). This fault continues NE passing the Western coast of Lefkada (red on the map). The phenomenon will continue for several days, due to the small focal depth these earthquakes will be quite noticeable. We are monitoring it to see if there is a shift in the microseismic activity towards the large rift zone I mentioned earlier.”
A new earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale occurred on Sunday (3/3) in Kefalonia. Seismologists have been monitoring the seismic sequence for the last 10 days.
According to the Geodynamic Institute, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 3 km west of Assos Kefalonia, while the focal depth was calculated at 8.4 km.
Seismologists are wary as in a period of 5-6 hours there were 9 earthquakes, from 3.5 am in the morning until 9 am on Sunday.
Earthquakes range in magnitude from 3.3 on the Richter scale to 3.5 on the Richter scale.
Seismologists consider 2 things: either it is a series of very small earthquakes that occur in a very short period of time, or on the other hand they are aftershocks and they are waiting for something bigger.
And in Istanbul, which is the arc of Anatolia, there is a seismic arc that gives strong seismic vibrations of more than 7 Richter.
The experts point out that because a long time has passed and there has not been a strong tremor, they expect a very strong earthquake, without however specifying when.
That is why in Turkey they have put up some signs – because of the risk of a tsunami – what will be the escape routes if something happens.

Today (yesterday, Sunday 3/3) it reached 3.5 Richter, which is the largest earthquake to date, said Mr. Papadopoulos and continued: “We are monitoring the evolving seismic activity. There are two possibilities in such cases that we consider.
One is what we call a “swarm series”, that is, relatively small magnitudes that are approximately equal to each other 3.5, 3.4, 3.3 Richter, as is the current case and the second, the most dangerous, to be aftershocks. I’m not in favor of the second opinion.”
