Former state Rep. Glenn Rogers launched a digital and streaming ad campaign across Texas declaring that he would never endorse Paxton, utilizing an eight-figure effort funded by a political action committee. This pushback coincides with a spike in outside GOP spending, giving Paxton’s side a huge advertising advantage in the closing weeks of the campaign.
Shaking Up the Texas Senate Landscape
The path to this general election matchup stunned the political world when Donald Trump bypassed incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn. Despite Cornyn’s loyal support for Trump, Trump endorsed Paxton.
Douglas Heye, a former communications director for the Republican National Committee, highlighted the strategic risk in an interview with The New York Times, stating that Trump effectively ended Cornyn’s political career with a single endorsement. Heye observed that while the move delivered a short-term win for the MAGA faithful, it placed a previously safe Senate seat in real jeopardy by elevating a more polarizing candidate.
The political consensus is that James Talarico presents a significantly more formidable challenge to Paxton than Cornyn would have faced.
