KGB method: Was Navalny killed with a blow to the heart?

The body of opposition politician Alexei Navalny has disappeared. But reports from the “Polarwolf” penal camp indicate a KGB-style execution.

  • Alexei Navalny, Russia’s most prominent opposition politician, died in a prison camp at the age of 47.

  • His body has disappeared and the cause of death is unknown.

  • However, a human rights activist believes he was deliberately killed – in a way that leaves no trace.

A single blow, delivered with great force to the heart region, is said to have ended the life of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny: This is reported by Russian human rights activist Vladimir Osechkin, citing statements from a source in the “Polarwolf” prison camp. According to Osechkin, the bruises found on the opposition leader’s body are compatible with the “one-punch” method of execution.

This is an old method used by the former KGB special units, he told the Times. The secret service trains its agents to kill a man with a blow to the heart, to the middle of the body. This is a “trademark” of the KGB, as the method leaves hardly any traces.

Isolated in the freezing cold for hours

Osechkin says that the day before his death, Navalny was forced to spend between two and a half and four hours in an open-air solitary confinement room where temperatures could drop to minus 27 degrees. Typically, prisoners are kept outdoors for no more than an hour and in far less extreme conditions.

“I think that they first destroyed his body by keeping him in the cold for a long time and slowing down the blood circulation to a minimum,” Osechkin explained. “After that, it’s very easy to kill someone within seconds if the agent has some experience.”

Navalny’s mother is suing for the body to be returned

Navalny’s mother, Ludmila Navalnaya, who has not yet been allowed to see her son’s body, has recently claimed that the politician was poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok. Osechkin thinks this is not very plausible: he is sure that the authorities could have killed Navalny “in any way they wanted” and “did not want to leave a trace in his body that would lead directly back to Putin.”

Navalny’s mother has now filed a lawsuit in a court in Salekhard against the authorities’ refusal to release the body for burial.
