Since yesterday, 22 teams from 11 different countries are competing in the 51st edition of the Montaigu Football World Cup.

Every year, it is an anticipated, recognized and high-quality event which takes place around Montaigu. It’s about World Football, a competition which brings together international U16 nations. Since March 25 and until April 1, 22 teams compete in three separate tables.

“The tournament must be a celebration of football. We want to give people pleasure by offering them quality matches. For this, we are opening the World Cup to other footballs, with new nations that we know less here, but also bringing back countries,” says Anthony Thibaudco-president of Montaigu Football World Cup.

11 nations represented

For 8 days, three tournaments will compete: the men’s nations challenge with 8 teams (France, Ivory Coast, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Czech Republic, Japan, Mexico, Wales), the women’s nations challenge with 6 teams ( Netherlands, France, Mexico, Portugal, Japan, Sweden) and the club challenge with 8 teams (Brest, Bordeaux, Rennes, Lyon, Sélection de Vendée, Nice, Nantes, Strasbourg).

In total, 11 countries from 4 continents. “Among the men, there is a very good field. Among the women, very great football nations are there”welcomes the other co-president, Franck Piveteau. “The successes and the level of the tournament mean that the nations take the event very seriously. This is the example of Côte d’Ivoire, which will be present as part of their preparation for the U17 Africa Cup of Nations”, adds Anthony Thibaud. England and the United States, respectively winners in the men’s and women’s tournament the previous edition, are not in the game this year. Their absences thus allow these two challenges to be more open.
