Killed in stampede in Venezuela

At least two people died in a stampede in Venezuela at a traditional festival honoring a saint. At least 18 other people were injured, according to Venezuelan media, citing initial information from the authorities today.

According to the police, following the performance of the Colombian singer Nelson Velasquez in the city of Santa Teresa del Tuy, around 50 kilometers from the capital Caracas, there was a stampede yesterday when visitors tried to leave the concert. Two people suffocated. The festival was dedicated to Saint Teresa of Avila.

The injured were taken to the hospital in Santa Teresa del Tuy. Given the large number of injuries, the clinic might not treat everyone. Venezuela is in a deep political, economic and humanitarian crisis. The health system in the oil-rich South American country is on the ground.
