North Korean State Affairs Commission Chairman Kim Jong-un attended the military parade held to mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the regime (September 9) with his daughter Joo-ae.

The Korean Central News Agency reported on the 9th, “The civil defense military parade commemorating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Republic was held in a grand manner at Kim Il-sung Square in Pyongyang on the 8th.”

Originally, this military parade was named ‘Civilian Armed Forces Parade’. As North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency changed the name to ‘Civil Defense Armed Forces Parade’, no strategic weapons, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), appeared at the parade.

North Korea’s civil defense is similar to South Korea’s reserve force, and refers to unit-specific units of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Guards, rather than the regular army. The Worker-Peasant Red Guard is comprised of a private military organization comprised of workers, farmers, and office workers organized by workplace and administrative unit.

Strategic weapons, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), did not appear at this year’s September 9 military parade.

At the head of the military parade on this day was the ‘Capital Party Member Divisional Column’, followed by the Hwanghae Iron and Steel Joint Enterprise and the Workers-Peasant Red Guards of the National Academy of Sciences.

Regarding the mechanized column, North Korea claimed that it was a ‘motorcycle column with rapid mobility’, ‘an anti-tank missile column towed by tractors’, an ‘anti-aircraft artillery column’, and a ‘camouflaged radiation artillery column’.

On this day, Chairman Kim Jong-un sat in a special seat at the podium with his daughter and military personnel to watch the military parade. It is understood that he did not make a special speech that day.

Lee Byeong-cheol, secretary of the Workers’ Party, and Park Jeong-cheon, head of the party’s Military Government Guidance Department, attracted attention by taking a special seat at the podium.

The military parade was attended by the Chinese party and government delegation headed by Liu Guo-zhong, Vice Premier of the State Council, members of the Alexandrov Name Russian Military Academy Concert Group, and Chinese and Russian diplomatic representatives in North Korea.

Among the attendees that day, the person who attracted the most attention was Prime Minister Kim Deok-hoon, who was expected to be reprimanded after receiving a public reprimand from Kim Jong-un. Prime Minister Kim recently attended the launch ceremony of a tactical nuclear attack submarine and was confirmed to be in good health after being called as a member of the presidential delegation at the military parade.

Lee Byeong-cheol, secretary of the Workers’ Party, and Park Jeong-cheon, head of the party’s Military Government Guidance Department, attracted attention by sitting in the ‘special seat’ of the podium.

This is the third military parade in North Korea this year, following Army Foundation Day (February 8) and the so-called Victory Day (Korean War Armistice Agreement Anniversary, July 27).

Previously, North Korea announced that it had built its first ‘tactical nuclear attack submarine’ at the Sinpo Shipyard in South Hamgyong Province the day before. It is interpreted as an intention to promote internal solidarity by promoting the regime’s achievements in a situation where economic difficulties are increasing.

The South Korean government criticized this, saying, “We deplore that North Korea is obsessed with developing futile weapons and squandering scarce resources while paying no attention to the difficult lives of its people.”

Kim In-ae, deputy spokesperson for the Ministry of Unification, said on the 8th, “North Korea’s weapons development and threats will become meaningless due to the solid ROK-U.S. combined defense posture and the strengthened overwhelming response capabilities of ROK, U.S. and Japan, and they must realize as soon as possible that they will only make their own security more vulnerable.” pointed out.

Deputy Spokesperson Kim continued, “Chairman Kim Jong-un said that the so-called tactical nuclear submarine would be a burden for South Korea and would be inconvenient,” adding, “The only thing that is inconvenient for us is the livelihood of the North Korean people, which has been ruined by the wrong choice of the North Korean leader, and the miserable North Korean situation.” “It’s just a human rights reality,” he added.
