Schneider-Wagentristl: If suicidality increases by 300 percent, all alarm bells must ring

Vienna (OTS) Today, experts from the Austrian Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ÖGKJP) sounded the alarm regarding the fact that suicide is the second most common cause of death in the adolescent and young adult age group.

The ÖGKJP also emphasizes that there are too few child and adolescent psychiatric beds available in Austria. Burgenland was cited as a negative example at the online press conference because there is not a single child and adolescent psychiatric bed here.

The chairwoman of the Austrian Children’s World, Julia Schneider-Wagentristl, takes this as an opportunity and demands again: “It cannot be the case that people continue to look the other way when it comes to mental illnesses, especially in children. We have been seeing an increase in mental illness among children for years. We have far too few care places throughout Austria, in federal states like Burgenland there are no inpatient treatment options at all, and overworked staff is also the order of the day. The situation is no longer sustainable and things have to be done now.”

Federal Managing Director Matthias Pfeiler also comments on the alarming figures and also emphasizes the staff: “The ÖGKJP figures speak for themselves. It must not be the case that children and young people do not receive the treatment they urgently need! We have to get going with the care places and the staffing, because every suicide is one too many.”
