Kingdom Hearts 4 is targeting a late 2027 release window across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, bringing major structural changes to Square Enix’s franchise. Revealed during the D23 event on August 16, 2026, an extended trailer confirmed that Mickey, Donald, and Goofy will finally step beyond simple AI support roles to become fully playable characters.
Breaking the Mold With Multi-Character Gameplay Integration
According to reports from the D23 panel, the 3-minute and 54-second trailer showcased direct combat sequences featuring Donald casting spells and Goofy operating as a physical tank with his shield to control spatial dynamics on the battlefield. These are not restricted sub-menus or isolated minigames; they are distinct operational states that introduce variety into the encounter loops.
The mechanics take an even sharper turn with Mickey. His sequence centers around a “world-book” environment located within Scala ad Caelum. Here, the rendering engine executes dynamic transitions between 3D and 2D perspective planes reminiscent of papercraft titles. Mickey traverses pages, flattens into a 2D asset to solve environmental puzzle platforms, and shifts between lateral side-scrolling and deep-zone exploration. These segments indicate dedicated chapters rather than brief cameos or sidelined missions.
Expanding the Disney Universe With Coco and Quadratum
Pixar’s film Coco officially joins the roster of Disney worlds for Kingdom Hearts 4. The initial footage displays Donald and Goofy actively pursuing Sora through the new realm, while other clips place the duo battling enemies in the Underworld alongside Hades. While Square Enix has yet to clarify the exact narrative weight of the Coco realm, the thematic emphasis on familial bonds, memory, and the boundary between the living and the dead fits neatly into the lore of the series.

Meanwhile, narrative progression continues to orbit around the missing protagonist. The trailer’s final beats confirm Riku’s arrival in Quadratum, though developer showcases omitted any immediate gameplay snippets for him. Co-director Tai Yasue emphasized during the D23 presentation that the team’s production schedule for the late 2027 launch is secure.
The 2027 Multiplatform Rollout and Disney+ Integration
Square Enix is backing up the game release with a broader push. Alongside the software rollout, an official Kingdom Hearts anime project is slated as “Coming Soon” for Disney+ in 2027.
Players can already add the title to their wishlists across the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, and the Nintendo Switch 2. By casting such a wide technical net, the development team is ensuring market penetration when the title finally lands in late 2027.
