Cautious scientific findings that kiwis can prevent cancer have been around for some time. But cancer research is tricky and studies should be subject to strict guidelines before they are accepted as true evidence of an effect or non-effect.
It is precisely for this reason that the biochemist Giuseppe Lippi and the doctor Camilla Mattiuzzi published a review study on kiwi. To do this, they examined a number of studies about kiwis and their alleged anti-cancer effects and evaluated them according to strict scientific standards. Ultimately, only eight of over 50 studies were able to meet the two researchers’ criteria.
These were five in-vitro studies – i.e. purely laboratory tests – and two in-vivo studies – i.e. studies on humans. “Taken together, the results of these published studies suggest that kiwifruit supplementation may be associated with direct and indirect anticancer effects,” the researchers wrote Research.
Ascorbic acid as a decisive criterion
But what gives the kiwi its apparent superpower? According to Mattiuzzi and Lippi, the ascorbic acid contained in kiwis could play a key role. This ensures a “reduction in oxidative DNA damage”. In addition, eating kiwis stimulates digestion. The enrichment of lactic acid bacteria and more frequent bowel movements would also reduce the risk of colon cancer.
