Thrissur / Chennai ∙ Music director K.J.Joy (77), who composed the music for immortal film songs like ‘Kasthuriman Mizhi…’ and ‘En Swaram Poovittum Ganame…’ passed away. He died yesterday morning at his home in Chennai. Public darshan tomorrow at 10 am at Kalpana House near Santhom Church in Marina Beach; Burial followed at 3.30pm at Kilpoke Cemetery.

Joy, a native of Thrissur Nellikunn, resided in Chennai. He was bedridden for more than 10 years due to a stroke. His left leg had to be amputated. Joy has been described as the first ‘techno musician’ in Malayalam who brought revolutionary changes in melodies with musical instruments including keyboard and accordion instead of harmonium. Started as an accordion artist with music director MS Viswanathan. MS Viswanathan, who recognized the talent, brought the music director to the scene.

Joy found a niche with Western-style melodies and lively songs in a time when maharaths like Devarajan, Baburaj and Dakshinamurthy were in full swing. Two hundred and ninety songs in 75 films in 2 decades. The last film was ‘Dada’ (1994). Wife: Ranjini. Children: Angel (Australia), Ashok (US), Alice, Amita and Anand (all three Chennai).
