Know how to die | The Journal of Montreal

When Jean-Bernard told me about the end of Loulou, his wife whom he adored, I couldn’t help but think of Marion, my boyfriend who requested assistance in dying at the age of 62, on October 31 last. You have guessed that we are talking about cancer, about the inevitable end, but also about serenity.

When it’s time, I’ll ask for the nudge, the syringe shot to sneak away. End of physical suffering, end of moral pain, of the shame of being incurably ill.

Loulou and Marion will have taken control of the last stretch of their lives, of their existence. Yes to life, yes to death. Both asked for just a little mental calm a minute away from closing their eyes forever. The two wanted to come face to face with themselves, stop everything and fall into nothingness. Sad ? Yes and no. Yes for those who remain, but no for those who go and must leave in a last gift after the cruel shovels in the face that are the series of bad medical, family and treatment news that the cancer dog brings .

FRIENDS GONE

Not two years ago Loulou made her final choice, alone like a big girl and without crying. Three months ago Marion even asked for a little silence for a minute before closing her eyes forever. He wanted to concentrate and go alone with himself.

In both cases, I searched and asked for so many details that I was embarrassed, but now I know like I never knew. A dimension of life that I knew very little about.

Don’t think it’s suicide. It is a marvelous and new choice which is added to the end of life that is too painful and painful, when there is a way to get out of it, to avoid pain, such useless tortures. Another avenue than palliative care which is often hard and sad.

Thank you Lulu! Thanks Marion. Thanks for the great lesson. I will keep it until the last…
