Koduman Farmers Society, a producer and distributor of value added products in the agricultural sector, has started small grain farming. Manicholam is the first crop. It is the fifth most important cereal crop in the world. It is also known as Indian millet. Manicholam has exceptional drought tolerance. It is ground and made into a variety of sweets and snacks for young children. It is estimated that the yield will be 2500 metric tons per hectare. It can be harvested in 120 days from sowing. About 30 cents of homesteads are cultivated in heavy soils. The company is targeting seed production as part of expanding agriculture.
In Kerala, small grains are widely grown in Idukki and Palakkad Attappadi, Agali, Sholayar and Puttur panchayats. Palakkad has about 1,200 hectares under cultivation in 192 tribal village clusters. Kerala ranks 10th in the export of millet crops. It has great demand in America, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait and UAE. Increase in use of small grains and income from exports are major factors attracting farmers.
Central and state governments are also trying to spread agriculture to more places. New discoveries in food resources have emerged as food grain shortages and malnutrition have become major problems worldwide. A storehouse of protein, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, small grains also contain high amounts of calcium, potassium and iron. This increases their importance. The United Nations has declared 2023 as the International Year of Small Grains. The cultivation of small grains is not insignificant considering the good health benefits and the economic benefits generated through export.
