Korea was selected as the host country for the 2025 ‘World Environment Day’ event. The Ministry of Environment and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) announced on the 21st that Korea was selected as the host country for the 54th World Environment Day in 2025 following a high-level meeting held in New York, USA on the 20th (local time). World Environment Day, celebrated every year on June 5, is a memorial day established by the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972 to call for the international community’s interest in environmental conservation. At this anniversary event, key figures from each country, representatives of international organizations, and representatives of companies and civic groups will attend to pledge joint efforts. This is the second time that Korea is hosting this event, following the 28th World Environment Day in 1997. The Ministry of Environment predicted that the 2025 Environment Day event will be held the year after the ‘5th Intergovernmental Negotiations on Plastics Agreement’, which was confirmed to be hosted in Korea in the second half of 2024, and will be an opportunity to widely publicize the importance of ending plastic pollution to the international community. The Ministry of Environment announced that details, including the specific domestic venue, will be decided in 2024 in consultation with the United Nations Environment Program. Inger Andersen, Secretary-General of the United Nations Environment Program, said, “Strong cooperative relationships are the foundation of multilateral cooperation in the environmental field,” and added, “I am grateful to Korea for hosting the 2025 Environment Day to end plastic pollution.” Minister of Environment Han Hwa-jin said, “As the host country for World Environment Day in 2025, we will lead the international community’s efforts to prevent plastic pollution.” Senior Reporter Kim Jeong-su [email protected]
