Kremlin plans to lift Twitter ban

The Kremlin is considering lifting the Twitter ban since Russian state agencies have regained access to the social network. Their accounts had been banned following the Russian operation in Ukraine, before Elon Musk took over the management of Twitter.

Since Friday, April 7, 2023, users of the platform can once more consult the accounts of the Kremlin or even those of the Russian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense.

A member of the State Duma’s Information Policy Committee has officially asked Russia’s media watchdog to consider lifting restrictions on Twitter. His appeal was supported by the Russian NGO Internet Safety League.

Separately, the BBC complained to Twitter following its main account was labeled as “government-funded media”, sparking anger at the British broadcaster which insists on its independence.

Elon Musk responded to the BBC saying all media have some degree of bias, while adding that he considered the UK channel to be “one of the least biased”.
