Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kristopher Letang set an impressive National Hockey League (NHL) record in a 7-0 victory over the New York Islanders on Wednesday night at UBS Arena.

The Quebecer has in fact collected no less than five assists… in a single period of play, once morest the New York Islanders.

See Kristopher Letang’s five assists in the video above.

The 36-year-old athlete thus became the first defender in the history of the Bettman circuit to achieve such a feat.

Only one other player has achieved this in NHL history and that was forward Dale Hawerchuk in 1984 with the Winnipeg Jets.

In the second period, Letang was complicit in the successes of Jake Guentzel (twice), Evgeni Malkin (twice) and Radim Zohorna. Rickard Rakell also hit the target during this engagement.

Letang, however, was not finished blackening the scoresheet, as he also provided an assist on Valtteri Puustinen’s goal in the third period. He thus tied the record by an NHL defenseman in a single game. Bobby Orr and Paul Coffey had notably achieved the feat before. Gary Suter, in 1986, was the last to have collected six assists in a game.

A 6th point for Letang in the same match! –

This is the first time in his successful career that the Montreal native has collected six points in a game. He had already collected five assists once morest the Jets in January 2015.
