Kurt Burneo is the new Minister of Economy, what is his trajectory?

President Pedro Castillo appointed Kurt Burneo Farfán as the new holder of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF).

Burneo joined the Ministerial Cabinet, after the ratification of Hannibal Torres in office, and will replace Óscar Graham, who has been in office since February 2022.

The economist becomes the third head of the MEF in the Castillo government, which has been in office for just over a year.

It is worth mentioning that previously Burneo indicated that he was offered up to two opportunities to join the Minister council.

“There were two attempts for me to join as Minister of State. Unfortunately, things had not changed much regarding the way the State was being managed, I decided to step aside and not accept the invitation,” Burneo told local media a few months ago.

Burneo graduated as economist at the National University of San Marcos and has completed master’s degrees at the University of São Paulo and the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, as well as a doctorate at Ramon Llull University – ESADE.

This economist already has previous experience with a ministry, since he was head of the Ministry of Production between July and December 2011, in the government of Ollanta Humala.

He previously served as deputy minister of finance in the government of Alejandro Toledo between 2001 and 2004 and was also his head of the economic team when he was running for the 2011 elections.

In addition, he was chairman of the board of Banco de la Nación from 2001 to 2006 and worked as director of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCR) from 2001 to 2006.

On the other hand, he has worked as teacher at the Esan University, San Ignacio de Loyola (USIL), San Martín de Porres (USMP) and Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP).

According to the PUCPsince January 2012 he has also served as Alternate Executive Director for Peru at the Inter-American Development Bank and has been a consultant on economic-financial issues for the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (SERNANP), of the National Institute of Quality ( INACAL), of Industrias Nettalco, among others.
