What is the effect of vaccination against Covid-19 on menstrual cycles?

According to a study led by Alexandra Alvergne, CNRS1 researcher, vaccination against Covid-19 does not cause worrying menstrual changes. To achieve this result, the Franco-British team analyzed the results of a survey carried out in the United Kingdom in 2021 by examining a sample of more than 12,000 menstruating participants, of all ages, with or without children, of all geographical areas, vaccinated or not against Covid-19. On this panel, one in five women reported menstrual disorders after being vaccinated. Going further, the scientists noted that the risk of reporting menstrual changes was higher in women who smoked, who had previously been ill with Covid-19 or who did not use contraceptives containing estradiol (eg. example, the combined contraceptive pill). Moreover, according to their analysis, vaccination alone did not lead to an increase in abnormal parameters of the menstrual cycle. Recently published in iScience, these results are reassuring: vaccination against Covid-19 does not cause worrying menstrual changes. For the majority of women, the most common responses are normal, regular cycles at 70%.
