Fact-Checked Article: Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges Amid Climate Goals
In a landmark report released today, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) highlights a record-breaking expansion of renewable energy capacities worldwide. The agency’s latest data reveals that global renewable energy deployment grew by 298 gigawatts (GW) in 2023 alone, marking a 14% increase from the previous year. This surge underscores the accelerating shift away from fossil fuels as nations strive to meet their Paris Agreement commitments.

“The pace of renewable energy expansion is unprecedented,” said Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA. “We are witnessing a transformation in how energy is produced and consumed globally. Solar and wind energy remain the driving forces behind this growth, but innovations in storage and grid integration are also playing a critical role.”
The report notes that solar power led the charge, accounting for nearly 60% of all new renewable capacity added last year. Wind energy followed closely, contributing significantly to the overall growth. Hydropower, bioenergy, and geothermal sources also expanded, though at a slower pace.
Regional disparities persist, however. Europe continued to lead in per capita renewable energy deployment, while Asia dominated in absolute terms. China alone accounted for over half of the world’s new solar installations in 2023, reinforcing its position as the global leader in renewable energy adoption.
Looking ahead, IRENA projects that renewable energy could supply 60% of global electricity by 2030 if current trends continue. However, the agency warns that much faster deployment is needed to align with the 1.5°C climate target outlined in the Paris Agreement.
“The numbers tell a story of progress, but also of urgency,” La Camera added. “We must double down on our efforts to ensure that renewables not only grow but also become the backbone of our energy systems.”
