This is a highly anticipated event: the Center Pompidou-Metz (Moselle) opens its doors to the public on Sunday December 31, 2023 for an exceptional exhibition: “Lacan, the exhibition. When art meets psychoanalysis.”

Jacques Lacan, major figure of psychoanalysis, maintained a very intimate relationship with the artists of the 20th century and their works. He met, among others, Dali, Picasso and Dora Maar. Among the exhibited works which resonate with the complex thinking of the psychoanalyst, the famous and long-standing object of scandal: “The origin of the world by the painter Gustave Courbet.

Loaned by the Musée d’Orsay, the painting represents a close-up of a female genitalia. Its sulphurous reputation is maintained by the various owners of the work who hide it from view, some behind a curtain, some behind another painting.

Jacques Lacan acquired the painting in 1955 for the sum of one million five hundred thousand francs. Masked by a device in his country house, the painting reappears after the psychoanalyst’s death in 1981.

The exhibition is on view until May 27, 2024.
