Johannes Lamparter returned with a podium finish at the start of the triple at the home Nordic Combined World Cup in Seefeld. The Tyrolean, who had recently been in poor health, had to admit defeat in third place on Friday only to the superior Norwegian top favorite Jarl Magnus Riiber and his compatriot Jörgen Graabak (+38.1 seconds). Lamparter’s deficit was 48.5 seconds, Salzburg’s Stefan Rettenegger (+1:02.8 min.) came seventh.

“It was incredibly good, I never expected it to be like that. I made it to the finish line to survive. It can only get better, I feel better every day,” said Lamparter after his seventh podium finish this season on ORF. “Jarl can be beaten, but everything has to come together. Hopefully it will happen on Sunday.” Ten kilometers will be run on the cross-country ski trail on Saturday, and 12.5 km will be on the agenda for the triple finale in Tyrol on Sunday.

For Riiber it was the fifth World Cup victory in a row, the ninth this season and the 66th overall. The World Cup record winner took the lead in the normal hill jumping on the Seelos ski jump and started the cross-country skiing over 7.5 km 42 seconds ahead of his compatriot Graabak. Lamparter, who had been out for the past two weeks with a persistent cough, was sixth in the jump, 56 seconds behind. After the first of three laps, Lamparter was already the Norwegian duo’s first pursuer.
