The State of Valais presented its 2022 report on Thursday on the presence of the wolf in the canton. He confirms the existence of eight packs with young.
The State of Valais presented on Thursday a report on the presence of the wolf in Valais in 2022: 51 individuals were genetically identified against 36 the previous year. The presence of eight packs with young is confirmed and the large predator killed 415 livestock.
The Valais hunting, fishing and wildlife service (SCPF) identified 30 wolves and 21 she-wolves via DNA analysis. “We can also attest to the presence of eight packs, including a cross-border one, between France and Val-d’Illiez,” said Nicolas Bourquin, head of the SCPF.
Since 2005, the canton has noted “an increase in the colonization of the territory by the wolf”. The head of the SCPF, however, is “hopeful that the situation will stabilize”, as it always does when resources, such as habitat and food, run out.
In 2022, the top predator killed 415 livestock in 139 attacks. The previous year, the canton recorded 336 victims. Nearly 2.5 million francs have been invested in the protection of herds.
