Large surfaces: locks placed on meat and fish

As prices continue to rise in supermarkets, food thefts are on the rise. According to figures from the Ministry of the Interior, they are up 14% in 2022. To combat this phenomenon, businesses are strengthening their security.

This is one of the consequences of soaring prices. According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, shoplifting, especially of food products, increased by 14% in 2022. “A reality” confirmed by Thierry Cotillard, president of the group “Les Mousquetaires” (Intermarché, Netto…), on RMCthis Thursday, March 9.

“The novelty is that we anti-theft meat, we anti-theft highly packaged fresh fish. That’s new, we didn’t do it two, three years ago,” he explained.

“We see thefts which, when they are made, are on significant values. It may be 8, 9 euros. So, we have no choice, we team up. We also reviewed the planning of the vigils to have more important presences”, continues the president of the group of the Musketeers.

If shoplifting has always existed, it was not the case “in this proportion”. Faced with inflation, “today, it is accelerating”. “It puts the subject into perspective: how to make accessible, not good eating, but the power to eat, already. This is a situation that concerns us, ”says Thierry Cotillard.
