Agence France-Presse reported that after the news came to light that a staff member of the World Central Kitchen (WCK) was killed in an air strike, Joe Biden and the international community unanimously condemned it. The victims were distributing food to Palestinians who were on the verge of famine. WCK is one of the first two non-governmental organizations to provide food aid to Gaza via sea route.
“I can confirm that President Biden and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will have a phone call tomorrow,” a US official told AFP yesterday.
Biden previously said he was “angry and heartbroken” by the deadly attack. The victimized humanitarian workers include 3 British, 1 Polish, 1 Australian, 1 Palestinian, and 1 person holds dual citizenship of the United States and Canada.
Biden has since turned tougher in his rhetoric and demanded that Israel take more steps to protect humanitarian workers and civilians. It also shows his growing dissatisfaction with the way allies Israel and Hamas are fighting.
Israel admitted that it had made a “serious mistake”. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant ordered the armed forces to “maintain open and transparent channels of communication” with international organizations carrying out rescue efforts.
However, Biden noted that the attack was not “a single incident.” World Central Kitchen also stated that the organization had coordinated with Israeli forces, and since then the convoy with the WCK logo on its body was still attacked.
According to a United Nations (UN) coordinator, at least 196 humanitarian workers have been killed in the nearly six-month war in Gaza. This number is almost three times the number of fatalities in any other single conflict in a year.
