Latest NHL News: Compher Signs $25.5 Million Contract, Gostisbehere Joins Red Wings, and More

Compher signed a five-year, $25.5 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday. The deal will earn him an average of $5.1 million per season.

The 28-year-old forward had a career-high 52 points (17 goals, 35 assists) in 82 games with the Colorado Avalanche last season, before adding two points (one goal, one assist) in seven games playoffs.

Selected by the Buffalo Sabers in the second round (35th) in the 2013 draft, Compher has 194 points (88 goals, 106 assists) in 423 regular season games with the Avalanche, as well as 29 points (14 goals, 15 assists ) in 70 playoff games.

Compher won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022.

Gostisbehere will be on his fourth team in the past four seasons, having agreed to a one-year deal worth $4.125 million.

The 30-year-old defenseman had 41 points (13 goals, 28 assists) in 75 regular season games with the Carolina Hurricanes and Arizona Coyotes in 2022-23, including 10 points in 23 games after being acquired by Carolina on March 1, two days before the trade deadline.

In 15 playoff games, he had three assists.

A third-round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers (78th overall) in the 2012 draft, Gostisbehere had 311 points (87 goals, 224 assists) in 538 regular-season games with the Flyers, Coyotes and Hurricanes. He added eight points (two goals, six assists) in 32 playoff appearances.

In addition to Compher and Gostisbehere, the Red Red Wings also took advantage of the opening of the free agent market to add Justin Holl, Daniel Sprong, James Reimer and Alex Lyon to their roster.

Holl signed a three-year contract worth $3.4 million a year, while Sprong signed a one-year contract with a salary of $2 million. In goal, Reimer will receive $1.5 million for the next season and Alex Lyon, $900,000 over the next two campaigns.

Sprong set NHL career highs in goals (21), assists (25) and points (46) in 66 regular-season games with the Seattle Kraken last season. He added two points (one goal, one assist) in 10 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round (46th overall) in 2015, the 26-year-old forward has 116 points (67 goals, 49 assists) in 268 career regular season games with the Kraken, Capitals Washington, Anaheim Ducks and Penguins. He also had three points (one goal, two assists) in 13 playoff games.

Reimer was 12-21-8 with a 3.48 goals-against average, .890 save percentage and three shutouts in 43 games (41 starts) with the San Jose Sharks last season.

Drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fourth round (99th overall) in 2006, Reimer went 204-169-61 with a 2.87 GAA, .911 save percentage and 28 games. Whites in 476 regular season games (438 starts) with the Sharks, Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers and Maple Leafs. In 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games (10 starts), he was 5-5 with a 2.70 GAA and .925 save percentage.

Lyon went 9-4-2 with one shutout, 2.82 goals-against average and .914 save percentage in 15 games (14 starts, a career-high in an NHL season) with the Florida Panthers last season. He then had three playoff starts, going 1-2 with a 3.26 GAA and .902 save percentage.
