Public Health France has released a new report on the evolution of malaria in Mayotte. Since the beginning of the 2010s, there are no longer any indigenous cases on the island, but those imported are increasing in number.

Thanks to the reorganization of services in the early 2000s, the number of locally acquired cases fell from 294 to just 1 in 2015. This is the reason why since 2014, Mayotte has officially entered the malaria elimination phase. , according to the World Health Organization. This means that there are hardly any infected people left directly on the territory. And yet, from 2016, we observe an increase in indigenous cases. Since this period, they have nevertheless fallen sharply, and in 2020 no locally acquired cases were recorded.

However, those coming from outside are more and more numerous. From January 2021 to July 2023, 72 cases of imported malaria were declared in Mayotte, according to Public Health France. They come from Comoros and East African countries.

The precautions to take

How to recognize a case of malaria? The first symptom is often a high fever. It can evolve by cycle 2 or 3 days. To be sure, it is best to do a quick test or blood test.

To date, there is no vaccine against malaria, so it is important to take the necessary precautions before traveling to a country at risk. Before departure, the health authorities recommend putting mosquito repellents in your suitcase and taking preventive medication.

On returning from an endemic area, if fever is observed within 3 months, the patient should consult their doctor and carry out the necessary tests.
