New car registrations in Europe rose by 18 percent to 5.4 million cars in the first half of the year. That is still around a fifth less than the same period in the pre-pandemic year 2019, as reported by the European manufacturer association ACEA. At 15.1 percent, more electric cars than diesel vehicles were sold last month for the first time. The latter accounted for 13.4 percent of new registrations. In June 2022 it was still 17.4 percent. However, Germany and some other markets recorded an increase again last month.
Gasoline engines remain the largest market segment. They accounted for 36.3 percent of all new passenger car registrations in Europe in June. That is two percentage points less than a year ago. The share of plug-in hybrids fell to 7.9 percent in June (June 2022: 8.2 percent). Germany is the largest market here and saw a drop in demand of a good 40 percent last month. But even in France or Spain, only half as many PHEVs were sold as a year ago. (awm)
