Latest Updates on Occidental Nile Virus Cases in Europe: ECDC Report 2023

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reported 36 human cases of infection with Occidental Nile virus (VNO) during the week ending August 2, 2023. The cases were reported in Italy (25, including 1 death), in Greece (8, including 2 deaths) and in France (3).

This week, the following regions reported human cases of WNV infection for the first time since the start of the season: It ends, Pella et Larissa (Greece), Gironde (France), Novara, Cremona, Mantua, Modena, Torino, Pavia, Lodi, Milano, Verona, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia, Bologna et Ravenna (Italy).

From the start of the 2023 transmission season until August 2, 2023, European countries have reported 41 cases of WNV infection in: Italy (26), Greece (11), France (3) and Hungary (1).
