Dr. Abbas Sharaki, Professor of Water Resources and Geology at Cairo University, revealed the latest developments related to the fourth storage of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, and said that satellite images show that the Renaissance Dam lake is slowly approaching the third storage level, which stopped on August 11, 2022 at a level of 600 meters above the surface. The sea has a total storage of 17 billion cubic meters, and about 3 days remain (Friday, July 14, 2023) to reach a level of 600 meters (at the red line in the picture).
Dr. Abbas Sharaki added that the rain rate is increasing day by day, which this week reaches 200 million m3/day, and at the end of this month it will reach about 400 million m3/day. It is expected that storage will continue until mid-September at a level of 625 meters for the middle corridor. The fourth storage volume is about 24 billion cubic meters, with a total of 41 billion cubic meters.
The fourth storage is extended for an additional 4 days
Dr. Abbas Sharaki indicated that the storage extended for an additional 4 days after the opening of the second western discharge gate, bringing the total water passage rate to Sudan and Egypt to about 60-70 million m3 / day, and this covers Sudan’s needs at the present time after the completion of the Roseires Dam without shortage problems. Water, as happened in the first storage in July 2020.
And Dr. Abbas Sharqi said earlier this month that the fourth storage is harmful to Egypt, and that the total fourth storage is from 20-25 billion cubic meters at once, and this amount is very large, equivalent to 50% of the annual Blue Nile revenue, and about 45 percent. % of Egypt’s annual share.
