Puerto Ricans are one of the largest Latino communities in the US.

Object of desire or cause for concern.

Whether it’s to get your vote or to raise awareness about their presence in the country, Latinos are a central topic of political debate in the United States, despite being present in the country since its founding.

Of the more than 325 million inhabitants of the United States, almost 59 million are of Latino origin, the 18% of the population.

Mexico is by far the most represented country with more than 60% of all US Latinos.

It is followed by Puerto Rico, Cuba, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic.

And with smaller representations they are in this order: Guatemala, Colombia, Honduras, Ecuador, Peru, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Argentina, Panama, Chile, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Uruguay and Paraguay.

The ten states with the largest Latino population are: California, Texas, Florida, New York, Illinois, Arizona, New Jersey, Colorado, New Mexico, and Georgia.

But, which are the American cities with the most inhabitants of Latino origin? In this map we find the answer.

Mexicans in California

California is the state with the most Latinos and, as can be seen in the maps of the urban areas of Los Angeles, Riverside-San Bernardino and San Francisco, the vast majority are of Mexican origin.

Texas also with a Mexican accent

Texas, like another of the large border states with Mexico, has almost a 40% Latino population.

In large urban areas with more of a Spanish accent, the most common is, again, Mexican.

As we move away from the US-Mexico border, the Latino populations living in the country are more varied.

This is the case of the states of New York and New Jersey, to which the cities of New York, Newark and Jersey correspond, which, being adjacent, we present on the same map.

In Chicago, Mexicans are once again the majority, but Puerto Ricans account for almost 10% of the total Latino population.

Little Havana in Florida

The case of Florida, especially Miami Dade County, in the south of the state, is very particular because more than half of Latinos are Cuban.

In addition, in recent years the Venezuelan presence in the Sunshine State has increased significantly, something that will be better reflected in the next official census, that of 2020.

Come back Mexico

We conclude with another of the states on the border with Mexico, Arizona, where the immigration debate became highly relevant in the 2016 presidential elections (in which Hillary Clinton prevailed in the state).
