Laurent Schwartz: “Too much sugar makes the bed of cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s”

Before being perceived as a disease of the genome, cancer was considered a metabolic disease. Indeed, as early as 1924, Otto Warburg – winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1931 – put forward the hypothesis that cancer cells draw their energy from the fermentation of sugar. It is this little-known and forgotten track that Laurent Schwartz and the multidisciplinary scientific team he has set up have reopened and explored.

These new players in oncology – physicists, mathematicians, biologists, doctors – have come to the conclusion that the metabolism of cancer cells is disturbed. It must therefore be normalized and several substances have the ability to do so, without major side effects. This team of researchers works to develop innovative and non-toxic cancer treatments.

Trained at Harvard University and a long-time researcher at the École Polytechnique, Laurent Schwartz is an oncologist at the Assistance Publique des Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP). We asked him about this new way of looking at cancer.

LaNutrition.fr: How do scientists, biologists and physicists explain cancer?

Laurent Schwartz : It’s a real twist because new players are arriving: physicists and mathematicians. They come from a totally different world from that of biologists and doctors: the world of medicine has its language and its specialty, that of physics speaks with equations. We no longer have a separation with the good cells on one side and the bad cells on the other. Physics tells us about energy, electrons, protons and neutrons. It gives us another way of looking at cancer, biology and aging. With this totally physical reading grid, cancer becomes a consequence of an excess of electrons in the cell. This implies revolutionary consequences: the treatments are possibly there, and cheap, with another economic model.

What message should we send to people who have cancer today?

I tend to divide cancer patients into several groups:

  • patients whom we can cure with conventional therapies: for these, above all, nothing should be changed;
  • patients for whom the prognosis is poor: for these, we don’t know what to do and we only have leads. These tracks consist in improving the combustion of sugar by lipoic acid, by hydroxycitrate, by methylene blue…

Which diet to advise against cancer?

It is clear that a diet high in sugars is dangerous. It is scientifically indisputable. Next, we don’t really know how low the sugar should be and whether to totally replace it with ketone bodies. But too much sugar is the bed of cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s.

Aging, cancer, Alzheimer’s… are they all linked to a problem with the functioning of the mitochondria?

Yes and it is also related to an increase in electronic pressure. We arrive at a very physical reading of all disease, which is basically not much different from an increase in electronic pressure. There is a common point in the physical sense between these pathologies.

What are your research projects with the “Guérir du cancer” foundation?

The foundation with which I collaborate finances doctoral students, always with a view to publications and standardized work. The goal of research projects is to try to lift cancerous fermentation with drugs to treat cancer.
