Targeted for almost a week by accusations of sexual harassment from a municipal employee, Louviérois alderman Laurent Wimlot, who had withdrawn from his duties, indicated Thursday in a press release that he had decided to withdraw from political life and resign from his mandates as alderman and municipal councilor in La Louvière. Mr. Wimlot has been a municipal councilor since 2006 and an alderman since 2014.

“Since November 3, I have been the subject of a smear campaign triggered by a denunciation orchestrated by an opposition municipal councilor and relayed in various media,” said Mr. Wimlot. “I would like to remind you that to date, I have not received any official letter communicating a complaint for sexual harassment to me even though it is being reported in the press. I am therefore judged in the public square before any instruction.”

According to him, Cohézio, the independent body responsible for receiving this complaint, has not, at this stage, heard any of the parties. “From now on, I would like to state that I strongly contest any act of sexual harassment against anyone.”

“As I turn 54, I am closing an important chapter in my life. Faithful to my political and philosophical convictions, I have therefore decided to withdraw from political life and resign from my mandates as alderman and municipal councilor,” he added.
