Lausanne Cathedral will be adorned with new lights by the end of 2025, the date of its 750th anniversary. Its exterior lighting system dated from the 1960s and required a complete overhaul. The new concept, work on which will begin in autumn 2024, is intended to be more ecological.

Fifteen companies were invited to submit their proposals, three were selected by a panel of experts. The winning project was imagined by the French office L’Acte Lumière. According to a press release from the Canton of Vaud, the new device “is distinguished by framed sail lighting, distant, but precisely directed on the building, thus minimizing light pollution”. It will evolve throughout the day and the seasons.

In terms of the environment, the concept provides for “significantly reduced” light pollution and promises a reduction of more than 60% in electricity consumption.

The press release further specifies that a pilot phase will take place this spring in order to refine the final details. The three competing projects are on display at the cathedral until January 21, 2024.
