Spielberg, Austria – Liam Lawson delivered a impressive performance at Saturday’s Qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix, achieving a top-six grid position. This impressive result marks a significant turnaround for the New Zealander following his return to Racing Bulls and an earlier demotion from the senior Red Bull team.
Lawson’s journey this season has been one of highs and lows. After starting the 2025 campaign with red Bull, he faced unexpected challenges that led to his demotion after only two race weekends. Since then, Lawson has been diligently working to regain his confidence and demonstrate his capabilities.

Factors Behind Lawson’s Improved Qualifying
When asked about the key to his improved performance this weekend, Lawson pointed to a clean qualifying session. “A smooth Quali, honestly. The last couple of weekends the pace has been there through practice – Canada was strong, Barcelona was strong, and just in quali it wasn’t.”
He further explained the pressure of the close competition: “This weekend, of all the weekends to get it across the line, it’s been cool as it’s so close. It puts pressure on us behind the wheel to execute,and same on the team.”
“With the car we’ve been fine-tuning all weekend and we don’t have time to miss anything, because everybody else is chasing as well. It’s cool to get it across the line!” Lawson stated.
So far this season, Lawson has only one points finish, an eighth-place result at the Monaco Grand Prix. He remains optimistic about securing another strong finish in spielberg.
“I hope so!” Lawson said. “Simultaneously occurring, the [tire degradation] is decent, and the long runs are tricky. We had a good long run [in practice] but it’s always different in a race when you’re in traffic, and I’m sure there’s going to be a mix of strategies.”
Teammate’s Struggles
In contrast to Lawson’s success, his rookie teammate Isack Hadjar faced challenges, being eliminated in Q2 and set to start Sunday’s race from 13th.
“It’s disappointing,because Q1 was looking really good,” Hadjar commented. “Even my Q1 lap would have qualified me for Q3, so I don’t know how we can go backwards from that.”
“Usually we make progress and it wasn’t the case today, so it’s very disappointing. It was very inconsistent in Q2, on both new sets of tyres as well, so it’s hard to understand,” hadjar added.
