IIn the fight against his electoral defeat, US President Donald Trump has sharply criticized the US Supreme Court after his setback in the Supreme Court. “This is a major and scandalous miscarriage of justice. The people of the United States have been betrayed and our country embarrassed, ”wrote Trump on Twitter. The president told Fox News on Saturday that he was “so disappointed” with the US Supreme Court.
The incumbent president again claimed on Twitter that he did not lose the election, but won with a “landslide victory”. There is no basis for this. President-elect Joe Biden – a Democrat – is due to be sworn in on January 20th. Trump sees himself robbed of his victory by election fraud. However, neither he nor his lawyers have provided convincing evidence.
The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a Texas state lawsuit against the presidential election result. Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton wanted to overturn Biden’s victory in the states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin and Michigan. The Supreme Court said Texas has failed to explain why the state should have a legitimate interest in how other states hold their elections.
“The Supreme Court really let us down. No wisdom, no courage, ”wrote Trump. He announced that he would continue to fight against his defeat. “We have only just started fighting !!!” wrote Trump in capital letters. Twitter provided several tweets from the president with warnings that his alleged manipulation in the election is controversial.
Trump also attacked Georgia and Arizona state governors Brian Kemp and Doug Ducey. They had opposed Trump’s efforts to counter Biden’s victory in their states. Trump wrote on Saturday: “You have allowed states that I have won with ease to be stolen. Never forget that, elect her out of office! “
Trump also criticized Attorney General William Barr. The “Wall Street Journal” reported that Barr had known about investigations against Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden since the spring. Barr wanted to keep this investigation out of the election campaign. Trump retweeted a Twitter message calling for Barr’s dismissal if the report was correct. The President wrote: “A great disappointment!”
The Texas lawsuit was given no realistic chance. The same goes for Trump’s ongoing efforts to overturn the outcome after all. The Trump camp has received more than 50 legal defeats so far, but is still not abandoning the fight. In no state did the presidential supporters change the outcome of the November 3rd election.
The Supreme Court had just rejected a request for an injunction last Tuesday, with which the Trump camp wanted to overturn the election result in Pennsylvania. Critics see behind Trump’s refusal to acknowledge his defeat as an attempt to continue collecting donations from supporters.
Trump had applied for entry into the process aimed at by Texas and argued, among other things, that he did not even have to prove that there had been fraud. It is only necessary to show that the procedure deviated from the requirements of local parliaments. In addition, the lawyers of the Trump camp claim that the alleged irregularities in individual states have destroyed evidence of the fraud so that it can no longer be proven.
Paxton had alleged in his complaint to the Supreme Court that the constitution had been violated in the course of the election. Therefore, the results there should not be taken into account. In addition to Trump, Republican Justice Ministers from 17 states and 126 Republican MPs from the US House of Representatives were behind Paxton’s lawsuit. 22 other states and US territories argued against this. The sued states dismissed the initiative as an abuse of the legal system.
The relevant US authorities had declared the choice to be the safest ever in the US. Most recently, Attorney General Barr had also said that there was no evidence of fraud to the extent that it could alter the outcome of the election. All 50 states and the capital city of Washington have certified their results.
The results from each state are the key to winning the presidential election. The US President is not elected directly by the people, but by 538 electoral voters who usually vote according to the result in their respective states. 270 votes are required for victory. Biden got 306 voters behind him after the results. State electoral votes are scheduled for Monday. The result is to be officially read out in Congress in Washington on January 6th.
After the death of the liberal judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg in September, Trump had put pressure on to quickly fill the seat on the Supreme Court with the conservative lawyer Amy Coney Barrett before the Supreme Court election. He also referred explicitly to a possible dispute over the outcome of the election. The Conservatives now dominate the court with a majority of six to three votes. However, the Trump camp’s previous lawsuits have been dismissed by judges regardless of whether they were nominated by Democratic or Republican presidents.
Supporters of Trump demonstrated again on Saturday in Washington against the election result. US media reported that several thousand demonstrators had gathered in the center of the American capital. Almost a month ago, thousands of demonstrators in Washington demonstrated for Trump.
